Medical Surgical Nursing I

Course Description

Students will learn to focus on the care of individuals throughout his or her life span, experiencing the most common disorders associated with integumentary and the musculoskeletal system. Other topic for discussion included community/home care nursing, and the care of the surgical patient. They will integrate previous learning relating to the concept of holism, nursing practice, nursing process, multicultural society, and communication to assist the person with basic needs during health and illness. The student is expected to utilize critical thinking, the nursing process, adaptation process, nursing skills in addition to management skills as they matriculate through each course. He or she is also expected to demonstrate professional growth and to function within the provisions of the Illinois Nursing Act of 2000.

Pre-requisites

Successful completion of the following courses with a minimum grade of “C”.
• Anatomy and Physiology
• Basic Nursing I and II
• Pharmacology and Medication Administration
• Geriatric Nursing
• Pediatric Nursing
• Obstetric Nursing
